We really love the organization Help One Now, a collective group of churches, businesses, communities and individuals from around the world. These people are dedicated to using their gifts, talents and resources to help end extreme poverty, care for orphans, rescue slaves and see communities transformed by serving international partners through Help One Now currently in Haiti, Uganda, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe. They sponsor kids, host garage sales, donate funds, take trips, advocate, and much more. TWVH band member, Andrea has seen how they have supported Haitian leaders first hand. Through Help One Now, Andrea has been able to have great relationships with everyday Haitians and Haitian leaders through whom God is showing His love, redemption and restoration. Help One Now just finished successfully running their backpacks of hope campaign. Invest in education. Invest in opportunity. Invest in HOPE. Check it out!
A local, Austin organization we like is the ReWork Project, a jobs program rooted in the importance of community for men and women experiencing homelessness. ReWork Project provides the opportunity for homeless people to build an income by making products out of their woodshop in South Austin while investing in positive relationships, with the ultimate goal of seeing folks get into permanent housing. They promote a job-like atmosphere and social norms while encouraging intentional friendships and healthy community. Being able to earn money by building sellable products can be a motivating and dignifying experience along with the support of true friends and healthy expectations which can aid tremendously in one’s path to permanent housing. ReWork Project just finished the process of raising their funds to operate within the next year! ReWork Project’s approach being based in personal relationships is different than the norm and things are just beginning towards a really exciting future, you want to be a part of this! Please consider supporting them financially or with your time. They are currently looking for men and women that can invest relationally in their ReWorkers in the program. This could mean talking over lunch once a week, meeting up to chat, etc. Contact ReWork Project to find out the best way you can be involved.
Another Organization TWVH digs is Girls Rock Austin or in general, the Girls Rock Camp Alliance. Girls Rock Austin is a summer day camp for girls in a positive, all-female environment that helps build self-esteem, creates leadership opportunities, cultivates a supportive community of peers and mentors, encourages social change and develops life skills all through music instruction and a variety of workshops & performances. While Girls Rock Austin likes it when campers decide to continue learning about music the primary goal of the camp is building girl’s self-esteem. They are a nonprofit dedicated to empowerment. At Girls Rock Austin the campers may learn anything like teamwork skills, how to play an instrument, how to write a song, women who rock, decoding and understanding images of girls and women in pop culture, music journalism and ‘zine making, exploring gender/identity issues, DIY music merchandise (making your own posters, buttons, tee-shirts, etc.) and much much more. Also, nearly half of the girls who attend summer camp are on scholarships. Girls Rock Austin continues to be the only rock camp in town with a mission to serve low-income girls and families. Girls Rock Austin also depends on the hard work, advice, and support of many individual volunteers, donors and business sponsors. Volunteers are essential to both the existence and the spirit of our camps so if you love what this camp is about and would like to volunteer, click on our link to their website and find out how you can help. They also take donations, sponsors, and in-kind support.
